India and Uzbekistan finished level on golds. India stayed ahead thanks to more silver medals.

The hockey double that made history

The last day belonged to hockey. The men’s team crushed Malaysia 5-1 to defend their title and seal India’s 21st gold. The women’s team beat China 1-0 to win their first Asian Games gold since 1982. It is the first time both Indian hockey teams have won gold at the same Games.

Cricket gold for both teams

India’s cricketers made it a clean sweep too. The women thrashed Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final, and the men beat Pakistan by 19 runs to keep their title.

Other big moments

  • Wrestling: India’s best Asian Games wrestling tally since 1962, with Aman Sehrawat winning gold in the men’s 57 kg freestyle.
  • Golf: Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games golf gold.
  • Archery and shooting: historic first individual golds for Indian women in recurve archery and trap shooting.
  • Athletics: the biggest source of medals by volume, though the women’s 4x400m relay won the only gold.

Is 85 medals a good result?

Yes and no. It is India’s second-best Asian Games haul ever, behind the record 106 medals from Hangzhou. But it is 21 medals and seven golds short of that peak. The positive: more sports are producing champions, which bodes well for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
